Absolute Radio brings a summer of Britpop to the airwaves

Absolute Radio rewind 30 years…

It’s the summer of 1995 and a chart battle for the ages is THE talking point for indie music lovers who have to choose between Team Blur and Team Oasis. Three decades on and Absolute Radio listeners will get to relive that time when indie music dominated our culture and our charts, as the station celebrates all things Britpop.

Absolute Radio Breakfast Show host, Dave Berry:

‘What an epic summer this is set to be for those of us whose formative musical years were shaped by the sound of Britpop. My own history with the Gallagher brothers goes back quite some way, including the time I missed my own Breakfast show thanks to Liam, but Britpop is so much more than just one band and the chance to celebrate this incredible genre should not be missed!’

As Oasis re-form for the most talked about gigs of the year, Absolute Radio will offer a destination for music fans looking to revel in the nostalgia, celebrate their musical icons and enjoy the genre’s biggest ever summer of live music.

From June until August the station will be debuting new shows, curating exclusive Rayo playlists, broadcasting live festival coverage alongside classic sessions to deliver the ultimate summer celebration of all things Britpop.

And Louise Wener, songwriter and lead singer of Britpop legends Sleeper will also be joining the station to host four shows in July, playing her favourite Britpop songs and sharing the story of the time from her perspective.

Highlights began this week with live performances from the Neighbourhood Weekender Festival as part of a Live Music week and all hosted by Jay Lawrence, which continue through to Thursday 12th June.

Other highlights through the summer include coverage of Kendal Calling with Dan Noble broadcasting his weekend shows from backstage at the event, a brand new documentary, The Summer of 95, marking three decades since the biggest chart battle in music history, a brand-new programme – Absolute Radio’s Britpop Summer with Danielle Perry and Sunday nights in August will be chance to hear The Best of Tim Burgess’s Listening Party – The Britpop Albums featuring classic shows from Skunk Anansie, Catatonia and Travis, ahead of the new series of Tim’s Listening Party which will kick off with Cast and Garbage.
