Brits shell out 2k a year on “miracle” beauty and health products

‘Having a wellness goal gives your self-care routine a purpose, but it can be really overwhelming when we’re faced with so many products…’

From vitamin supplements to protein shakes, slimming pills, hormone balancing and libido enhancing remedies – a new study suggest Brits now shell out over £2k a year (£184 a month) on “healthy lifestyle” products, in a bid to make them feel and look better.

In fact, a staggering 93 percent polled in a recent survey believe the internet and social media has created a global obsession with wellness, health and beauty products. Gen Z are most likely to be convinced by what they see online, with three quarters (74 percent) admitting to buying ‘game-changing’ products.

And interestingly, the nation’s MALES fork out more on health and wellness a month, £199 on average, as opposed to £169 which was the average for women, according to the data, by Green Chef.

As many as 53 percent say they have been scammed by dupe products they saw advertised online, while the average respondent said they have only been impressed with the results of around a QUARTER of the products they have bought online.

Worryingly, as many as HALF (48 percent) of the 2,000 Britons, surveyed by Green Chef, admit they are prioritising things like supplements over eating a healthy diet, rich in vitamins, proteins and good fats. A figure that rises to 60 percent of Gen Z.

Almost a third (30 percent) admit they don’t pay enough attention to their diet, with many consuming sugars and refined carbohydrates on a daily basis, such as crisps (52 percent), sweets and chocolates (44 percent), white bread (44 percent), and fast food (41 percent).

Leafy greens were missing from a third of British diets (34 percent), which contain folates that encourage hair growth, followed by protein-rich oily fish (32 percent) which can support muscle repair, immune supporting roots such as ginger (25 percent) and high-fibre wholegrains that can aid digestion (23 percent).

Expert nutritionist Lily Keeling, is a big advocate for the idea that eating well should always be the first step to good health. Lily suggests, “Having a wellness goal gives your self-care routine a purpose, but it can be really overwhelming when we’re faced with so many products that claim to be solutions.

“For some goals, there are really simple kitchen swaps that can help you get started. We often spend time thinking about what we can remove from our diet, but as a nutritionist, I prefer to focus on the foods you can add into your routine.

“For example, you can maintain a sustained energy release by switching to wholegrains instead of white bread and white pasta, which contain fibre and protein for slow-release energy, and a top tip to improve digestion is cooling down starchy foods – such as bread or pasta – before eating them to increase their fibre content.

“If you’re feeling let down with your current routine, perhaps it’s time to switch things up and substitute a lengthy skincare routine for meal prep, or time spent researching supplements for a 30-minute meal.

“My favourite thing about seeing food as part of your wellness routine is that healthy foods can be really delicious, and there can be a lot of enjoyment in it too.”

In a bid to help consumers today constantly confronted with ‘game-changing’ products from the retail world to reach their goals, Green Chef is launching a retail counter with a twist alongside Oti Mabuse. The Wellness Counter is serving up nutritionist-backed food solutions INSTEAD of usual over-the-counter product solutions for clearer skin, anti-fatigue, muscle repair, weight loss etc.

Green Chef Brand Ambassador, Oti Mabuse:

“I’m a sucker for a trend, but over the years I’ve discovered that how I fuel my body is really the secret to feeling good. With a busy schedule, I’m always looking for ways to boost my energy levels. It’s easy to turn to supplements or caffeine – but I’ve discovered so many delicious meals with Green Chef that fuel me – and offer many other wins along the way too.”

Popping up at Battersea Power Station on Monday 23 June customers can visit the counter, fronted by expert nutritionists and Oti Mabuse, to receive a free diet ‘consultation’ based around their wellness goal, with samples provided in the form of free meals featuring key ‘wellness ingredients’.
