Old love songs dominate modern playlists

Arctic Monkey’s I Wanna Be Yours has been named the most romantic track among Spotify users…

A new study has revealed the most popular tracks with Spotify users in romance-related playlists. The research, conducted by expert casino analyst SlotsCalendarused Spotify Playlist Miner to discover 1,587 user-generated playlists related to romance and Valentine’s Day. More than 157,000 songs were found in total, and the most frequently added tunes were calculated as a proportion of all playlistsAdditional information on the number of streams was calculated, along with the estimated revenue from Spotify (£0.003 earned per stream).

The most popular song on romantic playlists is Arctic Monkeys’ I Wanna Be Yoursfeaturing in 12.16% of all playlists analyzed. The track is the band’s most-streamed song on Spotify, with over 2.8 billion plays, generating approximately £8.48 million in royalties. Released on their 2013 album AM, the song is based on a poem by John Cooper Clarke. 

One of the most recent additions to this list, Die With A Smile by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, ranks as the second most popular romantic song in 2025. The track featured in 10.52% of all romantic playlists and has amassed over 1.8 billion streams since its release in August of last year, earning the artists over £5.48 million in royalties alongside a Grammy award.

Mitski’s My Love Mine All Mine ranks third this year, appearing in 9.77% of playlists. The song, from her 2023 album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, has been streamed over 1.4 billion times globally. Its virality on TikTok last year significantly boosted its popularity, making it Mitski’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. 

In fourth place is Apocalypse by Cigarettes After Sex. Featuring in 8.88% of playlists, the track stands out for its slow, dreamlike sound. Another favorite on TikTok, the song has been streamed over 1.7 billion times on Spotify, earning the band approximately £5.13 million in royalties. 

Ranking fifth is Lovers Rock by TV Girl, featuring in 8.82% of playlists. Originally released a decade ago, the song found renewed popularity in 2024 after going viral on TikTok. With over 1.2 billion plays on Spotify, it remains the band’s biggest hit to date. 

Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood is the sixth most popular track, appearing in 7.56% of playlists. Released in 2013, the song achieved significant success despite never reaching number one globally. Its resurgence on TikTok in 2020 helped it accumulate over 3.5 billion streams, making it the seventh most-streamed song overall. 

Tied for seventh place are The Night We Met by Lord Huron and Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls, both appearing in 7.31% of playlists. Lord Huron’s track, from the 2015 album Strange Trails, has earned the band roughly £8.2 million in royalties from its 2.7 billion streams. Meanwhile, Iris, originally written for the 1998 film City of Angels, has garnered over 2.1 billion Spotify streams, earning The Goo Goo Dolls an estimated £6.4 million in royalties. 

In eighth place is the classic Ed Sheeran hit Perfect. One of Sheeran’s most popular tracks, it features in 7.18% of romantic playlists. The song topped both the US and UK charts, spending six weeks at number one in the UK and five weeks in the US in 2017. With over 3.2 billion Spotify streams, it has earned Sheeran approximately £9.8 million in royalties. 

Next is From The Start by Laufey, appearing in 7.12% of playlists. The upbeat tune, which went viral on TikTok in 2023, remains popular and has been streamed over 616 million times on Spotify, earning Laufey around £1.8 million in royalties.  Rounding out the top 10 is Steve Lacy’s Dark Red. The track, featured in 6.99% of playlists, has amassed over 1.6 billion streams on Spotify, further cementing its status as a TikTok favourite.
