Denise and Ruth talk numbers for National Numeracy Day

Loose Women Stars Denise Welch and Ruth Langsford Kick Off the Big Number Natter for National Numeracy Day…

TV personalities Denise Welch and Ruth Langsford have launched this year’s Big Number Natter, the UK’s only nationwide conversation about numbers, as part of National Numeracy Day.

In an open and heartfelt discussion the Loose Women panellists shared their own maths anxieties and experiences, proving that no matter who you are, it’s okay to struggle with numbers.

National Numeracy ambassador Denise Welch:

“Double maths used to make my palms sweat—I’d be crying. That fear has lasted to this day. I still add up under the table, and money management has been the bane of my life. But we’re laughing about it now because you have to have a sense of humour. That’s why the Big Number Natter is so important—it starts the conversation and helps break the stigma.”

Despite their struggles, both stars are championing the National Numeracy Challenge—an easy, free and confidential way to improve everyday number confidence in just 10 minutes. “This isn’t about becoming a maths genius,” said Denise. “It’s about learning some tools to make life easier—and National Numeracy can help with that.”

The Big Number Natter invites everyone to start talking about how they feel about numbers—whether good, bad or completely confused. Sharing stories can be the first step to building confidence and improving skills.

Ruth Langsford reflected on her school years, and the long-lasting impact of feeling left behind in maths lessons:

“When I got to grammar school and didn’t understand long division, I started to cry. I never caught up, and instead of trying harder, I just said, ‘I can’t do it.’ As an adult, you avoid anything that involves maths.”

The Big Number Natter is part of National Numeracy Day, the UK’s only day dedicated to everyday maths. This year’s theme is money—highlighting how better numeracy skills can help people make more confident decisions around managing finances. Find out more about how to get involved, access fun free activities, and try the National Numeracy Challenge.

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV1 and STV. Catch up on ITVX and the STV Player.
