The Hippodrome, Bo’ness, is Scotland’s best cinema, according to Tripadvisor reviews, with an impressive average score of 4.61 out of five. Edinburgh’s Dominion Cinema and the Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy also make up some of the nation’s best cinemas. The Apollo Leisure Cinema in Saltcoats is the worst-rated nationwide on Tripadvisor, scoring 2.64.
The video production experts at Wonderpunch analysed data from Tripadvisor on 65 cinemas across Scotland. An average rating out of five was calculated for each cinema based on all existing reviews, with an extra 20 three-star reviews added per cinema to help balance the data for locations with fewer reviews. Only cinemas with at least 20 reviews from users were included in the final ranking.

Dating back to 1912, the nation’s oldest purpose-built picture house has an average rating of 4.61, higher than any other cinema in Scotland. It has also gathered 127 five-star reviews, which make up over 80% of all the reviews.
Edinburgh’s Dominion Cinema is the second highest-rated nationwide, averaging 4.55 out of five. An independent, art deco venue that first opened in 1938, the Dominion Cinema ranks high thanks to 307 perfect five-star reviews from visitors. Cameo Picturehouse is the city’s next highest-rated cinema, placing 14th with a score of 4.01.
The Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy takes third spot in the study. The single-screen cinema has an average rating of 4.54 based on 271 reviews, 205 of which are five-star. Annan’s Lonsdale Cinema and The Tower Digital Arts Centre in Helensburgh also rank high in fourth and fifth. The Lonsdale Cinema scores 4.50 out of five, while The Tower Digital Arts Centre is slightly lower with 4.28.
The rest of the top 10 highest-rated cinemas are made up of Glasgow Film Theatre, Dundee Contemporary Arts, Highland Cinema in Fort William, Greenock’s Waterfront Cinema and the Everyman Cinema Glasgow.
Of all the three largest cinema chains in the UK (Cineworld, Odeon, and Vue), ODEON Luxe Glasgow Quay has the highest average rating (4.36), followed by ODEON Luxe Edinburgh West (4.18).
The Apollo Leisure Cinema in Saltcoats is the worst-rated nationwide on Tripadvisor, scoring 2.64 based on 25 reviews. ODEON Dunfermline and Vue Cinema Inverness also rank low with scores of 2.97 and 3.00, respectively.
