The actress has decided to leave her role as Michelle Connor.
The Sun reports that Marsh – a regular on the cobbles since 2006 – isn’t renewing her contract with the ITV saga to pursue other acting opportunities. Although the departure is being noted by some outlets as a ‘break’ due to the actress expressing a desire to reprise the role of Michelle in the future.
“When I was lucky enough to be offered four episodes I could never in my wildest dreams have thought I’d be here 13 years later. It’s been an incredibly difficult decision but it feels like the right time for me to explore some other roles. But this isn’t the last you’ve heard of Michelle Connor, she’ll be back!” – Kym Marsh
Marsh, 42, was first known as a singer before she ventured into acting and, performing in this capacity, made an early television appearance on This Morning in 1991. However, it wasn’t until a decade later that she really shot to fame when she appeared on the ITV talent show Popstars, one guise of the early-noughties predecessor of the X Factor that sought to launch a successful pop group.
Kym became part of the pop group Hear’Say who are perhaps best remembered for their release of Pure and Simple which had originally been recorded by English-Dutch group Girl Thing before they were dropped by BMG.

Hear’Say parted company in 2002 only a year after their televised formation with Kym moving into acting. Prior to joining Coronation Street, which was originally supposed to be a short-term arrangement, she had roles in Hollyoaks In The City and Doctors.
“Kym has done a fantastic job. She has brought incredible heart and humanity to some hugely important stories. We will be really sad to lose her when she goes but totally understand that, after dedicating herself to the show for so long she now fancies trying something else.” – John Whiston, Executive Producer
Michelle will make her departure from Coronation Street later this year, The Sun note, with bosses leaving the door open for a future return. The character’s storylines include finding out that, due to a hospital mix-up, her son Ryan isn’t really her’s; the introduction of her biological son, Alex; an on-off relationship with Steve McDonald with whom she faced heartbreak when their son Ruairi was stillborn and being stalked by Will Chatterton.
