Fallon joins a growing list of actors to announce that they are leaving the ITV soap.
Keen to pursue other roles, the 23-year-will bow out from her role of Bethany Platt when her current contract reaches its conclusion next year.
“After the most incredible 4 years, I have made the extremely difficult decision to leave Coronation Street at the end of my contract in 2020,” the actress told The Sun. “It’s hard to put into words how much this show means to me. I’ve made lifelong friends with some of the most talented and hardworking people in the industry, I’ve had some terrific and immensely important storylines and I’ve laughed with the best people everyday.
“I’m so thankful to Iain and everyone at Coronation Street, I owe everything to them and I will miss them greatly.”
The character of Bethany has been on-and-off a part of Coronation Street storylines since June 2000. In fact, she was at the heart of the drama before she was even born due to her mum, Sarah-Louise (Tina O’Brien) being just 12-years-old at the time of her conception.
The young Bethany was a part of many dramatic plots including being snatched by the Platts’ bereaved neighbour Alison Webster and accidentally swallowing an ecstasy tablet that her uncle David had stashed in one of her dolls.
Bethany was played by twins Amy and Emily Walton between 2000-2007
In 2007 Sarah accepted a job offer from her uncle Stephen, bringing about a move to Italy for herself and Bethany. They returned to the cobbles in 2015, with Bethany being central to a number hard-hitting plots over the past 4 years including a gritty grooming/sexual exploitation storyline that saw her lured into evil pimp Nathan Curtis’ (Chris Harper) seedy web.
“Lucy advised us at the start of this year that she would like to leave at the end of her current contract in 2020 to pursue other projects,” producer Iain MacLeod told The Sun. “I have no doubt that her stellar career will continue beyond the cobbles and would like to wish her all the best in whatever she does next.”
Fallon is just the latest star to announce that she is leaving the long-running ITV serial – joining a list that also includes Kym Marsh (Michelle Connor), Tristan Gemmill (Robert Preston), Faye Brookes (Kate Connor) and Katie McGlynn (Sinead Tinker). 2019 has also seen the departures of Connie Hyde as Gina Seddon and Bhavna Limbachia as Rana Habeeb.
The Sun claims that “gruelling hours, poor pay and a toxic atmosphere on set” is behind many of the departures.
“No one has been particularly happy since former show boss Kate Oates left,” a source apparently told the paper
