Virtual race event launched to raise funds for ParalympicsGB

Papa John’s, an official partner of ParalympicsGB, has this week announced its ‘Weirwolf Challenge’.

The fully immersive virtual race event will aim to raise funds for ParalympicsGB throughout the month of July, with wheelchair athlete and Paralympic legend David Weir leading the way.

“As Paralympians we are always looking to smash records and overcome adversity. The ‘Weirwolf Challenge’ is not only a great opportunity for me to share an insight into the preparation that goes into a Paralympic games, but to take you all along with me on the journey! However you wish to clock up your one mile a day, come and get involved and we can smash records together, at the same time raising vital funds for ParalympicsGB.” – David Weir

The challenge will see Papa John’s employees, customers and of course David himself, take part in a collective effort to see how many times they can travel from London to Tokyo and back again. The distance to the Japanese capital is approximately 8100 miles one way, and Papa John’s is asking people to do their part by registering at www.theweirwolf.jmvirtualraces.com.

Using the Just Move app, participants are being asked to clock up just one mile per day by running, walking, cycling, hand biking or via wheelchair as part of their daily exercise. All movement is then tracked by the app and accumulated to show many miles have been travelled collectively by those who have signed up and how close the team is to reaching its target. The challenge will also give participants the chance to gain an insight into David’s training schedule, highlighting the incredible amount of work that goes into preparing for a Paralympic games.

David Weir is a six times Paralympic gold medalist and eight times winner of the London Marathon. He will be heading to his sixth games and has established himself as one of the most recognisable faces of Paralympic sport. In 2020, David was announced as an athlete ambassador for Papa John’s and since then has been part of the brands ‘We are Limitless’ campaign, encouraging people to break their own limits, at the same time raising funds for ParalympicsGB.

“Our partnership with ParalympicsGB has been an incredible opportunity for us to join with our customers to raise money for a fantastic cause. The Weirwolf Challenge will give us all the chance to get active and break limits throughout July, I’m excited to see how many miles we can clock up together along with David” – Giles Codd, Marketing Director of Papa John’s UK s

The brand has also launched ‘The Weirwolf pizza, available now and inspired by David’s favourite toppings, it includes pepperoni, onions, green peppers, chopped tomatoes, sweetcorn and chestnut mushrooms.

The We are Limitless campaign, launched by the pizza chain last year, aims to shine a light on how each athlete ambassador has overcome challenges they’ve faced and acts as a rallying cry, encouraging both Papa John’s staff and customers to break limits and raise money to support ParalympicsGB. To date, the brand has already raised almost £170,000 for ParalympicsGB thanks to the support of its customers.
