GREAT! Movies celebrate the Oscars

It’s the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday 10th March and GREAT! Movies is showcasing its finest selection of previous Oscar winners…

Everyone can be part of the awards buzz from the comfort of their own home – and for free – as GREAT! Movies screen three, star-studded classic dramas – Philadelphia, Gandhi and Erin Brockovich this coming weekend.

Philadelphia – Sunday 10th March at 2.40pm

Tom Hanks won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in the moving drama, Philadelphia. Hailed as a landmark film with deep emotion and exceptional acting, Philadelphia stars Hanks and Denzel Washington as two competing lawyers who join forces to sue a prestigious law firm for AIDS discrimination. And as their unlikely friendship develops, their courage overcomes the prejudice and corruption of their powerful adversaries.

Gandhi – Sunday 10th March at 5.10pm

Sir Ben Kingsley stars as Mohandas Gandhi in Lord Richard Attenborough’s riveting biography of the man who rose from simple lawyer to worldwide symbol of peace and understanding. A critical masterpiece, Gandhi is an intriguing story about activism, politics, religious tolerance and freedom.

But at the centre of it all is an extraordinary man who fought for a nonviolent, peaceful existence, and set an entire nation free. Winner of 8 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, Gandhi’s highly acclaimed cast also includes Candice Bergen, Edward Fox, Sir John Gielgud, Roshan Seth and Martin Sheen.

Erin Brockovich – Sunday 10th March at 9pm

Julia Roberts won an Oscar for her starring role in the inspirational true story of a woman who helped win the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit. Erin Brockovich (Roberts) is a single mother of three who, after losing a personal injury lawsuit, asks her lawyer, Ed Masry (Albert Finney), if he can help her find a job. Ed gives her work as a file clerk in his office, and she runs across some information on a little-known case filed against Pacific Gas and Electric.

As Erin begins digging, she’s convinced that the facts simply don’t add up and persuades Ed to allow her to do further research.
