5 reflect on ’70s Eurovision highlights

5’s seventies specials continue…

A 90-minute romp through an iconic decade of The Eurovision Song Contest is served up by 5 tomorrow.

The 70s was a dark period in recent history. Political unrest, strikes, power cuts and hyperinflation. So, thank goodness we had a gloriously glamorous singing competition featuring the very best and whackiest that Europe had to offer to cheer us all up once a year.

Featuring classic archive performances from Abba, Brotherhood of Man, Dana, Mary Hopkin, Cliff Richard, The Shadows, and The New Seekers, along with more notorious offerings such as Jahn Teigen – the Norwegian contestant who was the first to score the dreaded ‘Nul Points’! The programme looks at the very rudimentary scoring, the strange gimmicks, the funniest lyrics and celebrate the strange interval acts.

Along with classic archive, the documentary speaks to Eurovision legends Dana and Cheryl Baker. 5 also talk to Eurovision insiders Pete Waterman and David and Carrie Grant, and super fan Richard Arnold, and get insight from the song contest expert, Dr Eurovision.

The Best of Eurovision in the 70s, 5, May 4th at 7.30 pm
