Bill Treacher pays tribute to Anna Wing

Bill Treacher has paid tribute to EastEnders co-star Anna Wing, following news of the actress’s passing earlier today.

“Anna was a very strong personality and a very good actress. She and I got on extremely well because we both came from the East End and we both came from the theatre where we learned our craft.” – Bill Treacher, speaking to ATV Today

Treacher was one of the BBC One soap’s original cast members alongside Wing, back in 1985, and played Arthur Fowler, the son-in-law of Wing’s character Lou Beale.

Lou lived with daughter Pauline and husband Arthur, and often gave out of work Arthur a hard time, however off screen their relationship could not have been more different.

“In the scenes I played with her I had to stop myself from laughing because of the way she used to do this “whoof whoof” thing with her cheeks, and she was the matriarch, and this just made me laugh. She was actually quite Bohemian and outrageous in her way, but she was a very dear person, very genuine, very warm, I loved her.  God bless her.” – Bill Treacher, speaking to ATV Today

Although Wing quit the soap in 1988, Treacher continued in the role of Arthur until 1996. Wing’s agent confirmed that the 98-year-old actress, who had a long career on stage and screen, passed away on Sunday.

A statement released by EastEnders, earlier today read:

“We are deeply saddened to hear that Anna Wing has passed away. From the very first episode of EastEnders, Anna created one of the most iconic matriarchs in television history. Lou Beale is so entrenched in EastEnders history & without Anna, the Beale family would never have been the focal point it is today. Anna will be remembered fondly by everyone at EastEnders and our deepest sympathies are extended to her family and friends.”

Peter Dean who played Wing’s on-screen son Pete Beale told ATV Today that Anna was ‘a very unique woman’ adding that she had ‘lived her stay here to the full’.
