Derek Martin has revealed that he would like to make a permanent return to EastEnders.
The actor will make a brief appearance in the BBC One soap this week when his character Charlie Slater arrives at the Queen Vic to spend Christmas with daughter Kat (Jessie Wallace).
“Who knows, if Charlie goes down well this Christmas, maybe it will all become more permanent. Nothing’s been said but I can’t help hoping. It was wonderful to go back after all this time. I got a call saying they wanted me to do an episode for Christmas and it turned out to be three. I walked into the Queen Vic on my first day and it was like I’d never left.” – Derek Martin speaking to The Mirror
The Slater patriarch originally appeared in the soap between September 2000 and January 2011 when he left the Square following the assumed death of his grandson Tommy.
Kat and Alfie (Shane Richie) face a bittersweet Christmas this year as they are about to lose their home after Alfie dumped Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons) to be with Kat. However, Kat will surprise Alfie with the news that they are expecting a baby on Christmas Day.
