EastEnders - Adam Woodyatt and Laurie Brett

EastEnders longest-serving cast member Adam Woodyatt was interviewed for This Morning‘s Soap Week earlier today ahead of the British Soap Awards.

Appearing live from Albert Square alongside screen wife Laurie Brett, the star spoke of the “overwhelming” response to the soap’s 30th anniversary episodes:

“It’s been a full on year. It’s been the toughest year that I can remember… the live week was something else – we all hoped it’d be good, but I don’t think we thought we’d get the response that we did get. It was just overwhelming.”

Adam joked that “Nobody offered enough money!” for him to divulge the identity of Lucy Beale’s killer ahead of the big reveal. He said of Eliot Carrington, who plays the culprit Bobby Beale:

“Big shout out to him, he did so well because he didn’t get to rehearse [the reveal scene] until the afternoon of the transmission because up until that point I was Bobby…”

He added of Lucy Beale actress Hetti Bywater’s reaction to the killer during a rehearsal:

“Hetti was lying on the floor and I was still stood there and then all of a sudden we called Elliot over and she was like “what do you mean it’s not you?” and then she was like “oh my god, not you!”

Speaking about his on-screen mother Kathy Beale [Gillian Taylforth] returning to the Square, he said:

“No idea [when she is returning] and I don’t care, I just can’t wait until she gets here. Gill is coming back, I don’t know how Dom [Dominic Treadwell Collins, Executive Producer] is doing it, he hasn’t told me. I just can’t wait until she does get back, its going to be great working with Gill again.”

He added, “I gave Dom her mobile number so he could call her without telling her agent! We had to keep it secret…!”

Adam is nominated for best actor at the awards this weekend with voting open at britishsoapawards.tv
