Scottish actress Dawn Steele is to join the cast of BBC Scotland’s River City as newcomer Annie Jandhu, when the popular weekly drama welcomes new faces to Shieldinch alongside series favourites in the autumn.
“After playing a TV vet for years it’ll be nice to turn my hand to being a doctor and I’m really looking forward to working with Sanjeev who’s a good friend of mine. Annie and AJ are great characters, full of promise and hopefully the River City fans will welcome them into their home every week. – Dawn Steele
Steele, whose other credits include ITV drama Wild At Heart and BBC One series Monarch Of The Glen, will play locum GP Annie Jandhu, wife of businessman Amandeep ‘AJ’ Jandhu, played by Sanjeev Kohli. Annie and AJ make their debut in Shieldinch in October this year with Dawn and Sanjeev filming their first scenes when River City returns from its summer filming break next month.
Also joining the cast later this year is star of Katie Morag and Shetland, Ann Louise Ross, who will take on the role of Martina McAllister, mother to Alex and sister of Billy Kennedy. A formidable force to be reckoned with, Martina is fiercely protective of her family – at all costs. Ann Louise Ross will make her debut in November 2015 in a storyline centred around her eldest son, Alex McAllister, played by Jordan Young.
“I’m excited about returning to Scotland and joining the cast of River City. It’s been such a long time since I’ve been up in Scotland working so it’ll be great to come home. Everyone says River City is a wonderful place to work and I’m really looking forward to getting back into filming for TV after doing a lot of theatre work over the last couple of years. And working on a soap like River City is a whole new challenge for me!” – Dawn Steele
Other new casting confirmed for River City include TV newcomers Christine Steele, Benjamin Nugent and Toniann Christie who will play siblings Jenny, Drew and Ruby McLean, children of Caitlin (River City newcomer Gayle Telfer Stevens – Scot Squad, Sketchland). Along with their brash mother, the McLean children looks set to ruffle the feathers of Shieldinch’s residents.
River City airs on BBC One Scotland on Tuesday nights at 8pm
