ITV Granada, the makers of Coronation Street, have confirmed that Ryan Thomas is to leave the soap next year.
The actor, who plays builder Jason Grimshaw, has been part of the series for 15 years. He has however decided to pursue new challenges ITV has announced.
“Ryan has been an important part of Coronation Street for 15 years. We wish him every success when he moves on next year and we appreciate his desire to try new things. In the coming months he’ll be at the heart of a massive story, affecting not just his family but the Websters and the Windasses too which will take us well into 2016.” – Producer Stuart Blackburn
Ryan joined the series as part of the Grimshaw family in December 2000 with Sue Cleaver as mother Eileen and brother Todd played by Bruno Langley. Jason has been a bit of a heartthrob on the street, with many romances – but little long term commitment. Recent storylines have seen the character involved with ‘bad boy’ Callum Logan, who is now apparently residing dead beneath Gail’s granny flat in a sewer. Jason was beaten by Callum which left him in a critical condition and later he had to receive vital surgery on a clot on his brain.
“It has been a great privilege to be in Coronation Street for the past 15 years. The cast and crew are amongst the best in the business and to have had the chance to be a part of it for so long has been an amazing experience. The decision to leave was an extremely difficult one but I felt that now was the right time to spread my wings and try other roles. I’m just excited now to see what exit storyline the writers give Jason.” – Ryan Thomas
Coronation Street is also to lose its current controversial producer Stuart Blackburn early next year as Emmerdale boss Kate Oates takes over the role of Producer on the Salford based production.
