Becky McDonald tops poll of soap characters viewers would like to see back on their screens

Coronation Street‘s Becky McDonald is the soap character over 1,000 brits polled by WhichBingo would like to see back on our screens.

Becky – played by actress Katherine Kelly – wreaked havoc on the cobbles for six years between 2006 and 2012, and was last seen jetting off to Barbados on a first class ticket after sticking the metaphorical boot in to Tracy Barlow at her wedding to Steve McDonald.

However, it’s unlikely those polled will be getting their wish any time soon, as Kelly has taken on a range of roles in popular programmes since leaving the ITV saga, from Mr Selfridge to Happy Valley. Earlier this year the actress tweeted her unavailability when fans flocked to Twitter to ask her whether she’d be returning to the street following the death of Becky’s sister Kylie.

Among the other soap stars the public want to grace their screens again are EastEnders hardman Grant Mitchell and Corrie’s Janice Battersby, who came second and third respectively.

Grant, played by Ross Kemp, briefly returned to the BBC soap earlier this year as Barbara Windsor bowed out as Peggy for good, and also to settle a score with his brother. But, judging by the results, his stint was too short lived, with almost a quarter (23%) of Brits saying they wanted Grant to return to his old stomping ground in Walford.

Janice Battersby, played by Vicky Entwistle, left Corrie after a 14 year stint in 2011 when she went travelling with her boyfriend, but more than one in five (22%) soap fans would love to see her back in Weatherfield.

Top 5 most wanted soap character comebacks:

Becky McDonald / Katherine Kelly – Coronation Street

Grant Mitchell / Ross Kemp – EastEnders

Janice Battersby / Vicky Entwistle – Coronation Street

Pat Butcher / Pam St. Clement – EastEnders

Tina McIntyre / Michelle Keegan – Coronation Street

ITV’s second soap Emmerdale and Channel 4’s teen-aimed saga Hollyoaks didn’t fare particularly well in the poll, with no characters making the top five.

Bottom of the list is Emmerdale‘s Steph Stokes (actress Lorraine Chase), with only 4% saying they’d like her to return to the village. The controversial character endured a lot of dramatic storylines during her time on the soap, which ended with Steph being sent to prison after being wrongfully accused of murdering her brother Terence.

Top 5 least wanted soap character comebacks:

Steph Stokes / Lorraine Chase – Emmerdale

Sasha Valentine / Nathalie Emmanuel – Hollyoaks

Nana Mcqueen / Diane Langton – Hollyoaks

Justin Burton / Chris Fountain  – Hollyoaks

Luke Morgan / Gary Lucy – Hollyoaks

The results also show many regions have a strong affinity with the soaps set there. Manchester respondents named Coronation Street’s Janice Battersby the character they would most like to see back on their screens, whereas London championed EastEnders star Grant Mitchell to return.

Interestingly, although Leeds is close to Emmerdale’s fictional location in the Yorkshire Dales, the city did not go for a Emmerdale character, instead opting with the majority for Becky McDonald to return (37%).

“Here at WhichBingo we all love the soaps and we too would love to see feisty Becky McDonald return to Coronation Street. Our personal favorite, however, is former EastEnder Peggy Mitchell.” – Simon Jones, Commercial Director, at WhichBingo
