S4C look at the growing threat to Wales’ wildlife

Losing Wales’ natural treasures “a real possibility in the next few years” – Iolo Williams

Iolo Williams warns of growing threat to Wales’ wildlife in new S4C series, Iolo: Natur Bregus Cymru (Iolo: Wales’ Fragile Nature). Renowned naturalist Iolo Williams explores the treasures of Wales’ wildlife and warns that losing them is a real possibility if we do not recognise the growing impact of climate change and human activity on nature.

This three-part series explores some of the most iconic and unique habitats in Wales – including Celtic rainforests, vast wetlands, uplands, islands – and introduces the species that call them home. But alongside their beauty, these landscapes and species face increasing threats from climate change and human interference.

Iolo Williams:

“We have special habitats in Wales – treasures that the rest of the world connects with us. We don’t want to lose these treasures, but this is a real possibility in the next few years if we ignore the clear signs of humanity’s impact on nature.”

Each episode focuses on a different but urgent theme. The first episode shines a light on Wales’ natural treasures. The second looks at the country’s most endangered species, some of which are on the brink of extinction. The final episode looks at the effects of climate change and asks why it’s vital to protect, and even expand, these incredible habitats.

The series combines stunning cinematography with Iolo’s passion and years of experience as a broadcaster, writer and naturalist who has worked in conservation for over 30 years. His love for nature and wildlife goes back to his childhood in the Llanwddyn area in the Vyrnwy Valley. Since then, he has witnessed habitat destruction and a dramatic decline in species.

Species such as curlews, lapwings, yellowhammer, water voles and Wales’ rarest butterfly the High Brown Fritillary, have almost disappeared from many parts of the country. In the series, Iolo states that over 40 million birds have been lost in Britain since the 1970s.

“It’s a huge list to be honest – I could throw dozens of other species on that list too. Things I’ve seen dwindle or disappear completely. I’m very worried about the future and especially when I see weather patterns changing due to global warming – what effect is that going to have? A huge storm or a long period of drought can send other species into oblivion. “

Iolo: Natur Bregus Cymru is available on S4C, S4C Clic and BBC iPlayer from 9.00pm on Thursday, 1 May.
