In the future the BBC could launch more spin-offs from EastEnders states John Yorke, controller of BBC E20. Drama production after the success of web spin-off series
The success of EastEnders web based spin-off E20, which focused on four teenagers in Albert Square, could lead to future spin-offs from the BBC One soap. The teen orientated spin-off starred soap newcomers Emer Kenny, Sam Attwater, Ricky Norwood and Bunmi Mojekwu in 12 episodes written by script writers between the age of 17 and 22. The episodes revolved around the antics of the four as took up residence in one of the flats near the square. The spin-off was a huge success for the BBC with over 1 million viewers for the first instalment alone and all four actors are due to join soap itself as regular characters.
The success of E20 could lead to future spin-offs according to John Yorke, controller of drama production at the corporation. In an interview with the EastEnders fan site Walford Web Yorke state that future spin-offs were quite possible – if the right idea was put forward. For many years a Mitchell centred spin-off was long rumoured to be commissioned by the BBC and would take place “Up West” however despite constant tabloid speculation the spin-off never materialised.
