Best Doctor Who Season Finale: The Results

Best Doctor Who Season Finale: The Results

Last week we asked you to vote for the Best Doctor Who Season Finale so far – following the conclusion of the new series with The Big Bang. Boy did you vote – the poll was our most successful so far by a long shot and now we are ready to give you the results.

Usually with our polls we have a hunch over what will do well, what won’t and what the top contenders for the winners will be. However, this poll was different because to be honest we didn’t have a clue! Doctor Who is such a decisive subject for fans – its rather like marmite; you either like some of the elements that up the series or you don’t. You either liked the big season finales created by Russell T. Davies or you didn’t and as five of the six choices were produced by RTD we just had no idea which way the cookie would crumble, so to speak.

So which season finale won? Well it seems that the original is the best for you guys as the 2005 season finale Bad Wolf/The Partings of the Ways won with 36% of the vote and it was in the lead from very early on. In fact it was so far ahead none of the other choices really had much chance of catching up although they certainly chipped away at the percentage score for the finale because at one point it was at 52%. In second place was The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang was fought its way to second place having started off in fifth place. Perhaps the fact it came fighting back proves the repeat viewing of the two episodes are needed to appreciate them – if that’s the case it seems plenty of you came back having re-watched them and voted for Moffat’s first finale. Percentage wise The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang had 22% of your vote.

In third place was The End of Time which technically speaking wasn’t a season finale per se because it wasn’t at the end of a series but rather the end of David Tennant’s time with the programme. It was because it was David Tennant’s finale, and also that of Russell T Davies as show-runner, that was chose to include the story and with 21% of the vote seems that a fair chunk of you agreed with our including it. In fourth place was the tear jerking season two finale, Army of Ghosts/Doomsday when Rose was left trapped in a parallel universe and the Daleks and Cybermen declared war on each other – it had 13% of the vote.

Surprising in fifth place was The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End which were the source of much publicity at the time – and perhaps the best cliff-hanger ever – as the Doctor was exterminated by a Dalek and audiences were left wondering if he would regenerate; he didn’t. Perhaps it was because The Stolen Earth had such a terrific build up while Journey’s End was something of a letdown that it didn’t do so well here, who knows? Anyway the two episodes had 5% of the vote. In bottom place with only 1% of the vote was the season three finale The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords. Do we really need to explain why that did so poorly?

This week’s poll will be a continuation of our Big Brother poll to find the best series of the Channel Four reality series. However, fear not because a new poll will be featured on the site next week.
