ITV has confirmed that former Hollyoaks star Chris Fountain is to join Coronation Street.

Chris will be playing Tommy Duckworth who was last seen on the street in 2000. The grandson of Jack and Vera, Tommy will arrive on the street not knowing that Jack has died. It is said that he will blend into the community with ease and has an eye for the ladies.

I’m delighted to be joining Coronation Street, especially as I’m playing a Duckworth. I’m looking forward to upholding one of the most celebrated names in soap. I can’t wait to start filming in the New Year.” – Chris Fountain

Fountain in July spokeout about his time at Hollyoaks on Twitter saying he had “watched it recently and it was terrible.” After the Channel 4 soap he appeared on ITV’s skating competition Dancing On Ice where he found a whole new audience and many new fans. Corrie bosses however hope he’ll now become a ‘replacement’ for Jack Duckworth.

Producer Phil Collinson said “I have long admired Chris, right back to his first appearance on our screens as a young boy in Red Production Company’s Bob and Rose. He has the perfect balance of looks and charm and will, I am sure, create a brilliant successor to Jack. The ladies of Weatherfield had better watch out!”

The Duckworth family were a major part of Coronation Street from 1979 onwards when when the character of Jack, the long suffering husband to Vera finally appeared. Vera had been seen on the street as a semi-regular since 1974. The Duckworths moved onto Coronation Street in 1983, bringing their 19-year-old son Terry along too. The arrival of the family saw neighbours disgusted, it was deemed the Duckworth’s lowered the tone of Coronation Street! However for viewers they became one of the much loved familes.

Chris Fountain played troubled Justin Burton on the Channel Four soap Hollyoaks between 2003 and 2009. Perhaps Justin’s most memorable storyline was his taboo relationship with teacher Becca Hayton(Ali Bastian) and later his involvement with Clare Devine (Gemma Bissix) and Warren Fox (Jamie Lomas). Hollyoaks’ Who Pushed Claire Storyline?, fashioned after the infamous Who Shot JR? storyline in Dallas, revealed the bitchy minx attacker to be Justin. Fountain was most recently seen in the second series of BBC One’s drama Five Days and also in an episode of Casualty and has also been appearing on Stage.
