EastEnders has aired another surprise scene featuring Kathy Beale.

In tonight’s (19 May) episode of the BBC One soap, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) handed his former wife an envelope containing money as he joined her in a greasy spoon.

Answering Phil’s query on whether her husband Gavin ‘suspects anything’, Kathy replied: “Do you think I’d still be standing if he did?”

Ian’s mum – like he – appeared in the first episode of EastEnders on 19th February 1985 and went on feature in several high-profile storylines before departing in 1998. These included being raped by James Wilmott-Brown and a turbulent marriage to alcoholic Phil who is the father of her youngest son Ben.

Gillian Taylforth secretly reprised her iconic role earlier this year – making a live appearance in one of EastEnders‘ 30th anniversary episodes back in February, despite an earlier storyline that claimed she had been killed in an off-screen car accident in South Africa.

Prior to her off-screen demise, Kathy’s last appearance had been in 2000 when she made a guest appearance for Ian’s wedding to Mel Healey.

Viewers will find out the truth behind Kathy’s ‘fake death’ in the autumn, the Beeb note.
