Hollyoaks bosses have suggested that “Channel 4 screens are set to sizzle this summer as an influx of new characters set pulses racing in Hollyoaks Village!” Following a shake-up of the teen soap by new boss Paul Marquess – the show has seen a number of long-running characters axed and new faces hired.

Hollyoaks producer Paul Marquess says on the changes “We can’t wait for this huge new boost of energy exploding on screen. These exciting new characters join our fantastic core cast. Together they will ensure that 2010 will be a year to remember on Hollyoaks.”

New familes arriving on screen include The Costello family who, production company, Lime Pictures describe as “glamour personified.” Former The Bill actress Kim Tiddy heads up the Costello clan as mum Heidi, an ex-model who’s more than able to hold her own, whilst ex-footballer dad Carl, actor Paul Opacic, is an incurable ladies man. Eldest son Riley – who will be a familiar face for Grange Hill viewers, actor Rob Norbury –  looks set to cause a stir amongst the ladies of Hollyoaks whilst younger brother Seth, played by Miles Higson, is determined to step out of his brother’s shadow.

Marquess has also hired Rachel Shenton to play Mitzee. Lime Pictures say of the character “Proving that brunettes do have more fun Mitzee’s arrival in Holyoaks creates instant drama. The wannabe glamour model is desperate for fame and fortune and whilst the boys in the village can’t help but fall in love with her, she has her sights set so much higher. Desperate to emulate Heidi’s perfect life, just what will she do to achieve it?”

It’s not all new faces for the saga, Alex Carter is also set to reprise his role as Lee Hunter. Back in the Village and signed up to HCC, Lee is determined to make a fresh start amongst old friends. Carter has recently had a successful stint in Yorkshire Television’s Emmerdale playing  Jamie Hope.

There is also another new family on the block – The Sharpes. Lime Pictures state that this new family will  “make a crash landing into Hollyoaks when mum Gabby – played by Footballer’s Wives actress Phina Oruche – quite literally is knocked off her feet! Whilst making a desperate bid to escape her husband, Gabby is knocked down, only to be rescued by a Hollyoaks knight in shining armour.”

Gabby’s story will see her strike up a chemistry with her hero, but  as a mother of two children – Taylor, actor Shaun Blackstock, and Amber, actress Lydia Lloyd-Henry, Gabby will be forced to question if she can really leave her husband Phil.

It may be interesting to note that the Costello name was a popular family introduced into the now defunct Family Affairs soap by Marquess during his time as producer of the Five serial. Actors in the successful Family Affair’s Costello’s included Gary Webster.
