RTÉ News in Ireland report bosses have decided to bid goodbye to Hayley with an honest and emotional plot. The character, who was first seen in 1998, has become one of the most popular on Corrie, in part due to her on-screen partnership with Café owner hubby Roy (David Neilson).
Hayley was the first transsexual character to appear in British soap – Danny La Rue appearing as a woman in Crossroads doesn’t count – and more so the longest running transsexual in any soap in the world.
However after several big storylines actress Julie Hesmondhalgh decided to quit the five-episode a week soap in January this year. She had previously taken a year out between 2007-08.
Speculation in the tabloids has reported a tragic end for the character, however ITV Granada won’t confirm whether it is a sad or happy ending for Hayley, just that it will be emotional for the Croppers.
Hesmondhalgh hasn’t revealed any future TV plans as yet but she has previously been a regular panelist on ITV daytime’s gossip show Loose Women. (pictured)
