Telly picks for the coming week…
A family saga like no other. Betrayal, scandal, romance and radicalisation. Six aristocratic sisters come of age during the turbulent 1930s.
This is the true story of the Mitfords. The real events that happened to six sisters who refused to play by the rules, attracting scandal and notoriety at every turn. As the storm clouds of the 1930s gather, the Mitfords face a society in flux, and set out to be part of the change – with sometimes devastating consequences.
Amid the crumbling world of the British aristocracy, eldest Nancy navigates love and heartache while her siblings are drawn down unexpected and increasingly divergent paths. Attracted to ungovernable men, drawn to radical ideas, the Mitford’s can’t stay out of the headlines – while their bewildered parents try to make sense of their daughters’ behaviour and keep a grip on their failing finances.
In the first episode it’s 1931 and, while Nancy lives in vain hope that her boyfriend Hamish will propose, her younger sister Diana has it all– married to the richest man in London, several houses and two young children. But despite the enviable splendour of her sister’s life, Nancy gets the sense that something is amiss with Diana.
Meanwhile Farve is grappling with the declining state of the Mitford fortunes– it’s time for economy measures at the family home of Swinbrook, where Unity and Jessica stage mock battles, obsessed with the revolutions and uprisings that are happening all over the world. When Diana encounters charismatic up-and-coming politician Oswald Mosley, a train of events is set in motion that spells catastrophe for the family, leading to a shocking revelation at Unity’s coming out ball.
A family saga like no other, this is a tale of bonds and betrayals, public scandal, political extremism, jealousy, romance – and coming of age in the most extraordinary circumstances. Can the fractured sisterhood survive? Starring Bessie Carter, James Purefoy and Anna Chancellor.

Exposure: America’s Veterans – The War Within
|
From the BAFTA and Emmy-winning documentary maker Deeyah Khan, a documentary film about the devastating psychological aftermath of serving in the military in wartime.
Travelling from Alabama to Washington, Khan speaks to veterans of America’s “War on Terror” about their combat experiences, including accounts of violence unleashed on civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“I lost humanity. I lost empathy. I lost compassion,” one veteran tells her. Through deeply personal interviews, Khan’s film – part of the award-winning ITV Exposure strand – explores the dehumanising effects of war, and its long-term social impact on America and beyond – and it follows a group of veterans meeting face-to-face for the first time with some from the civilian population still emotionally scarred by the battles the US fought on their soil.
