Actor Geoffrey Hughes, known for his roles in Coronation Street and Heartbeat, is seriously ill in hospital after collapsing at his home.

Geoffrey Hughes is seriously ill in hospital after collapsing at his home on the Isle of Wight on Friday. The actor has been told that the prostate cancer he fought he had beaten a year ago has returned.
The actor is still remembered to millions of fans for his role of bin-man Eddie Yates in Coronation Street in the 1970s and 1980s – bowing out of the Granada soap in 1984 before making one last guest appearance in 1987 as part of Hilda Ogden’s (Jean Alexander) departure storyline.

Hughes has gone on to appear in many memorable roles since then such as Onslow in Keeping Up Appearances, Twiggy in The Royle Family, Vernon in Heartbeat and most recently in teen-drama Skins as Uncle Keith- appearing in several episodes across three seasons.
The actor has also guest-starred in episodes of Doctor Who (BBC One), Casualty (BBC One), Boon (Central TV/ITV) and The Upper Hand (Central TV/ITV).
