Millions tune in to witness England lose to Uruguay

At one point during yesterday’s match, 20 million viewers tuned into to witness England lose their second game.

England’s chances of making out of the group stages are all but gone now after losing to Uruguay. The South American team came out on top last night after star of the team Luis Suarez scored two goals. Despite the despair for England there was joy for Wayne Rooney who scored his first World Cup tournament goal.

The match screened on ITV had an average overnight audience of 18.51 million viewers from 8.00pm, the most watched match of the tournament so far. The full programme, hosted by Adrian Chiles managed an impressive 13.29 million viewers.

Elsewhere on BBC One, Holby City was seen by 2.31 million viewers against the first half of the game. Masterchef followed with 2.04 million viewers at 9.00pm, while Big Brother: Power Trip continued to hold up well for Channel 5, pulling in 1.2 million viewers from 10.00pm.

Today’s game between Italy and Costa Rica will be closely watched by England fans. Screened on BBC One today from 4.00pm, Italy need to win this match for England to still be in with a chance of progressing.
