Struggling soap Neighbours sunk to a dangerous low last night in Australia as the Channel Ten soap interested less than half a million viewers. The poor performance of the soap is a worrying sign as the soap prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary in March begins. In Australia last night the saga was seen by just 450,000 viewers. Since the show returned in January from its traditional Christmas break soap ratings have been down with only 600,000 viewers watching per episode – but now ratings have fallen even lower. The declining viewing figures is a dangerous sign for the soap which has been threatened with cancellation in the past few years over its continued poor performance.

In the UK the long running serial, which now airs on Five, continues to perform solidly but the UK broadcaster must be concerned its expensive investment isn’t popular in its native homeland. Over the past five years the soap has undergone a number of failed revamps all of which were to return the series to its “roots” and boost ratings. However, audiences haven’t taken to the revamps and Neighbours has continued to decline in ratings. In March it’ll celebrate its 25th anniversary but you can’t help wonder how long Neighbours can continue on-air if ratings sink even lower.
