A fast food fascination…
Forget Burger King; McDonald’s biggest rival in Britain today is Greggs.
The bakery chain has risen from its North East roots to become Britain’s biggest fast-food retailer, expanding so quickly that it will soon have twice as many outlets as Maccy-Ds. Last year Greggs overtook McDonald’s as the UK’s first choice for breakfast.
The two chains are battling it out at lunchtime with meal deals, and Greggs is now taking on McDonald’s aggressively at dinner, launching its very own burger. Dani Dyer explores this extraordinary fast food feud and examines how Greggs’ subversive marketing has blinded us to its huge growth.

In 2012 Greggs was part of a Sky One series that in Baking for Britain offered ‘viewers an insight into the popular high street bakery, from kitchen to boardroom.’
“Despite the cost-of-living crisis, we are spending more on convenience food than ever, with the market now worth a staggering £8.3bn. Greggs has stolen the crown. How is McDonald’s fighting back?” – Channel 4
