Emmerdale’s Emma Atkins on a break from soap

Emmerdale Charity in Court

Emma Atkins is taking a break from her role of Charity Dingle in Emmerdale.

The soap’s official website has released a video in which the actress reveals that she is pregnant and has ceased filming with the soap “for about a year”.

“I’m leaving probably for about a year to have a baby which is really exciting. I will miss Emmerdale so much but it’s a new little journey in my own life that I’m just taking on now.  I’ll miss everyone and I can’t wait to come back.” – Emma Atkins

Charity was written out of the show in last night’s (20 January) hour long edition which saw her imprisoned for perverting the course of justice. The character was handed a two year custodial sentence for coercing Rachel Breckle into taking the rap for the fire which Declan Macey started at Home Farm.

Charity’s hopes of leaving court a free woman were dashed after Rachel put in a surprise appearance in the witness box and revealed what happened between them.

“Finally-everyone knows Emma is leaving to have a baby. Can’t wait to be an ‘Aunty’ again… Emmerdale will miss ‘Charity’ but she’ll be back.” – Debbie Dingle actress Charley Webb (via Twitter)

Atkins made her first appearance as scheming Charity in 2000, remaining in the role until 2005. She returned to the soap in 2009.

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV/STV/UTV at 7.00pm with an additional episode at 8.00pm on Thursdays
