EastEnders finally revealed the identity of Lucy Beale’s killer in a special flashback episode set on Good Friday; the night of her death.
The concluding moments of the instalment, airing live on BBC One last night, saw Lucy’s half-brother Bobby emerge as the culprit.
Responding to a call on her mobile, Jane (Laurie Brett) was seen arriving at the Beale house where she was greeted by the sight of Lucy’s body on the living room floor. After ascertaining that Lucy was dead, Jane was left stunned after turning around to find Bobby behind her clutching the trinket box cum murder weapon.
“Whatever she says, she started it. She made everyone unhappy”. – EastEnders character Bobby Beale
Earlier in the episode, Bobby had overheard his sister engaging in a fight with Denise (Diane Parish) which prompted the confrontation with his sister. While further revelations will air in tonight’s episode, it is apparent that Jane has been covering for Bobby since the incident.
In a live Facebook webcast following the landmark instalment, EastEnders’ Executive Producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins revealed that Eliot Carrington who plays Bobby was apprised of the plans for his character on Monday.
“We told him [Eliot] on Monday. We told his dad before that obviously and checked that it was okay, but we knew that it was always going to be Bobby. He [Eliot] said ‘Oh God, that makes sense. Of course Jane had to do it because otherwise Bobby would go to juvey’. He’s a clever little boy!” – Treadwell-Collins
He added of the storyline: “We kept on going on about We Need to Talk About Kevin – we need to talk about Bobby! This is the beginning of an even bigger story for the Beales. There was one other suspect for about a day, but it didn’t feel right. We always said that this story had to come from the heart, and with this, it’s the start of a whole big new story for the Beales.”
Meanwhile, in last night’s hour-long edition set in the present day, EastEnders shocked viewers with the return of actress Gillian Taylforth in her iconic role as Kathy Beale. Kathy had, since 2006, been assumed to be dead.
