Ellen Thomas has joined the cast of EastEnders.
While limited details have been disclosed about her character, it has been confirmed that she is to play a ‘tough-talking matriarch’ with various links to the Square.
“This is one of the most formidable and complete characters I’ve ever played. I’m really looking forward to the delicious mayhem she’s going to bring to Albert Square.” – Ellen Thomas
Thomas previously portrayed the role of Mercy Olubumni’s religious nan Grace in the soap between 2010-2011, while an earlier stint in the show in 1990 saw her play Pearl Chadwick, the grandmother of Kofi Tavernier. The actress’s other credits include Rev, Coming of Age and Teachers.
“Ellen Thomas belongs on EastEnders. Like many actresses before her, she’s been in the show playing a different role – thank goodness Linda Henry didn’t just play Mandy’s mum – but this is the role she was born to play. Albert Square now has a new steely matriarch – with a few twisted secrets hidden behind her beaming smile…” – EastEnders executive producer, Dominic Treadwell-Collins
EastEnders airs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday on BBC One, with a weekly omnibus also on the channel and erratically scheduled repeats on BBC Three. Viewers can also catch up online via BBC iPlayer.
