EastEnders star Danny Dyer has promised that there are “powerful” scenes in the pipeline for his character Mick Carter following the shock twist that was aired in tonight’s episode.
In the latest visit to Walford, viewers discovered that Shirley (Linda Henry) is Mick’s mum and not his older sister as was thought.
“I’ve got a really good talent for driving my family away. I’ve lost my little boy… he was such a lovely baby” a worse for wear Shirley told her ex Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) at the start of the episode.
Phil was unaware that Shirley was referring to Mick after the revelation that she had attempted to drown him. He later paid her son Dean Wicks (Matt Di Angelo) a visit in an attempt to smooth over relations between them.
Later, Phil returned to the Square and advised Shirley to apologise to her son but he was left stunned when she heeded his advice and charged across to the Vic to tell her “baby boy” Mick she was sorry.
“Our executive producer Dominic [Treadwell-Collins] called me in to see him. And I really didn’t have a clue what he was going to say. When Dom told me, I was quite tearful. It’s an emotional thing and the way it plays out is going to be powerful. Linda [Henry] had known for months that this was going to happen. So as soon as I came out of Dom’s office, I dropped her a text and wrote, ‘Have a nice night, mum’ and added a couple of kisses. She rang me back straight away saying that she’d been dying to tell me.” – Dyer speaking to Radio Times
He added: “Mick won’t find out until further down the line. Obviously, the audience now knows, yet Mick is none the wiser. But viewers will start to see the reasons why Shirley has acted the way she has. After she admits to the drowning, Mick says to her, ‘promise me that there will be no more lies’. And obviously there’s still a massive one there waiting to come out.”
EastEnders continues on Monday at 8.00pm on BBC One.
